AAPI businesses were severely impacted by COVID-19 in 2020, and they have continued to face evolving and unforeseeable challenges in the years since. National ACE has released survey data on the experience of AAPI business owners during COVID-19 pandemic. Among its key findings, 84% of AAPI businesses have been negatively impacted by the pandemic and 44% have decreased the number of people they employ. Asian American women have been hit the hardest by the pandemic - 44% of those who are unemployed have been out of work for over 6 months or longer, and almost one in three AAPI woman business owners have experienced anti-AAPI sentiment because of the pandemic. Of 3,800 anti-Asian hate acts reported since the start of the pandemic, 38% occurred in businesses. AAPI business owners also face structural challenges to starting, retaining, or growing their businesses, including access to capital and contracts, language accessibility, and awareness of resources.
