2018 National AAPI Business Summit: Planning Meeting with WHIAAPI and MBDA
 

On February 9, National ACE met with the Minority Business Development Agency’s (MBDA) Acting Director, Chris Garcia and the Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI), Holly Ham, to discuss ways in which to collaborate on events specifically aimed at the bettering of the Asian American business community.  We look forward to an active year between our organizations. During the meeting, ACE confirmed its position as the host of the 2018 National Asian American & Pacific Islander Business Summit on May 15, 2018.  The event will be held in collaboration with National ACE and ACE Foundation as a part of a nationwide educational program to facilitate access to federal and regional programs impacting the greater business community.


Promoting Economic Growth with the CDFI Fund
 

On February 13, National ACE partnered with Michael Chan, President of Asian, Inc., for a meeting with the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund) to discuss issues of great importance to the Asian American business community, including access to capital, finance, and credit; disadvantaged business enterprises; and the importance of evidence based research and accurate data resources. We were able to express the need for giving Asian American and Pacific Islander businesses a seat at the table when new certification rules are created so that Asian Americans are treated fairly and recognized appropriately.  The CDFI Fund plays an important role in generating economic growth and opportunity in some of our nation’s most distressed communities. By offering tailored resources and innovative programs that invest federal dollars alongside private sector capital, the CDFI Fund serves mission-driven financial institutions that take a market-based approach to supporting economically disadvantaged communities.

 

Infrastructure Briefing with the U.S. Department of Transportation

 

National ACE’s Board members, MOU partners, and business leaders met with Joel Szabat, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Our Board Member, Karen Eng, and Michael Chan from Asian Inc. provided updates about their programs for the upcoming year.  DOT also briefed the delegation about President Trump’s $1.5 trillion infrastructure new investment.

 

Secretary Chao’s Lunar New Year Reception
 
On February 13, National ACE’s Board of Directors, MOU partners, and ACE NextGen was invited attend to Secretary Elaine Chao’s Lunar New Year Reception at the Department of Transportation. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, and Under Secretary for Policy Derek Kan also attended and spoke about the strong AAPI community presence in Washington, DC. Secretary Chao sent her greetings to 600 AAPI business and community leaders. Attendees also included National ACE Board of Directors Bill Imada and Karen Eng; Jeff Pon, nominee to the Director of the White House Office of Personnel Management; and Matthew Lin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
 

 National ACE Addresses the Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce’s 9th Annual AAPI Business Legislative Summit
 

On February 22, National ACE was invited to attend and speak at Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce’s 9th Annual AAPI Business Legislative Summit in Richmond, VA. Other speakers included Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax, as well as several members of the Virginia House of Delegates and U.S. Members of Congress. Discussions included issues on higher education reform, boosting Virginia’s employment and economy, and assistance for small minority businesses.

Delegate Sam Rasoul provided meaningful insight to constituents on how to effectively lobby their legislators. Tracey Jeter from the Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD) discussed the opportunities her office provides in business development outreach, procurement, and certification programs. SBSD provides access to capital, grants, and loan opportunities while doing advocacy work all year round.

National ACE President and CEO, Chiling Tong, provided remarks on National ACE’s mission and and our top policy priorities. This was a great opportunity to meet with fellow legislators and have conversations about the issues that impact small businesses the most.


National ACE Participates at White House Celebration of Lunar New Year
 

On February 22, National ACE gladly attended a Lunar New Year celebration with the White House Office of Public Liaison and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders at the White House. The event included keynote speakers, cultural performances, and a discussion among Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders.

Speakers included White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (WHIAAPI) Executive Director, Holly Ham; Matthew Lin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Jason Chung, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Treasury. Secretary Elaine L. Chao provided the keynote at the event.


National ACE Honored at the Dallas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce Gala
 
On February 23, National ACE was invited to join the Greater Dallas Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce (GDTCC) for their 2018 Chinese New Year Gala. President and CEO, Chiling Tong, received the Global Vision Award from the GDTCC on behalf of National ACE. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30) presented the award to Ms.Tong.  Congressman Marc Veasey (TX-33) was also honored at the event, which included lion dancing, acrobatic performances, and remarks from numerous distinguished guests. The keynote speaker was Christopher Reynolds, Executive Vice President, Corporate Resources and Chief Diversity Officer of Toyota Motor North America. At this gala, GDTCC showcased various high school student exchange activities, their annual convention, business conference, career and leadership workshop, and other notable events they have had through the year. We are thankful to be invited to their gala and look forward to more collaborations in the future.


National ACE Supports the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida and American Muslim Chamber of Commerce

 

On February 25, National ACE attended the 7th Annual Dragon Lunar New Year Festival Parade with the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida. We celebrated the new year by participating in the parade with Central Florida’s AAPI community. This was a great gathering of people to celebrate Asian culture. National ACE was pleased tomeet with Jose Fabricante, the new President of the Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, and Khalid Muneer, the President of the American Muslim Chamber of Commerce. We look forward to continuing our work with them in the future.  

National ACE Co-Hosts Black History Month Celebration with the National Minority Supplier Development Council 

 

On February 27, National ACE joined with The City Club of Washington, DC to celebrate Black History Month. City Club’s emphasis is placed on dining and entertaining, business, and social and community activities. The Special Guest Speaker was Naomie Lucas, the CEO of Southern Wicked Lemonade and the first minority female owned moonshine distiller in the United States. Ms. Lucas shared her success stories about how she developed her own brand and product. Louis Green, Interim President of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and CEO of Supplier Success was also in attendance. National ACE met with Mr. Green to discuss future joint endeavors.
